About Amy
I am thrilled to be joining Nourish as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with over 25 years of experience in nutrition and dietetics. My years of practice have been in hospital, supermarket, and clinic settings. More recently, I teach nutrition and dietetics and direct a dietetic internship program at the University of Minnesota. I love teaching upcoming dietitians and I also miss my clients! The five years prior to moving into the academic space, I specialized in weight management, where no one client encounter was the same. That is what I loved so much about nutrition counseling. Because every person has their own story, listening and providing care based on YOUR STORY is the key!
Approach to care
I am a counselor, working with you as a partner toward positive behavior change to improve your health and well-being in the way that suits you best. I use research-based strategies and will provide you with understandable education if needed. But I also know that just because you know something, doesn’t mean it is easy to do. I use a person-first approach. I learn what is important to you, what motivates you, and what your goals are. Then, we work together to create a plan that is tailored to you and only you. Because I have so many years of practice, if you don’t know where to start, that is okay too. I am happy to share what works for folks with similar profiles and provide tips and tricks along the way. The bottom line is we’ll work together to make it happen.
Your first session with Amy
The first session involves conducting a nutrition assessment. That is a fancy way of saying, I ask a lot of questions so that I can get to know you. This lays the foundation for any plan we make together. I ask about your typical eating and lifestyle patterns, your health history, your nutrition preferences, cultural and/or food traditions, and more. This portion of the first visit usually takes about 15-20 minutes, after which we can start working on a plan that suits you and your lifestyle. Sometimes, some nutrition education is helpful. Understanding the “why” behind nutrition recommendations is important to many folks. Change is hard. We can talk about what motivates you, your support system, and other things that can help make any changes you do make sustainable. We’ll take it one step at a time and make a plan until I see you again.
