About Benjamin
Welcome, feel free to come in and stay awhile! I am Ben Mayhew, a board-certified Dietitian and self-proclaimed foodie. I have experience over several years working with individuals in a 1-on-1 outpatient setting, as well as experience in clinical, community, and even food service settings. I enjoy keeping up with nutrition research and strive to convey individualized, evidenced-based strategies that will give clients the best chance for success. I'm a real person who has struggled myself with weight and weight-loss throughout my life. Due to this, I bring a very unique understanding of how difficult it can be to follow a healthy lifestyle, particularly doing so while trying to lose weight. I empathize on a very personal level with how hard it can be to regularly and consistently eat healthy.
Approach to care
My goal is always to convey research-based nutrition and lifestyle information in a straight-forward, easy to follow manner that will give the client the best chance of success. In order to do this, I have found that a collaborative and personalized approach works well. My first priority is to get to know the client and understand what the client is looking to achieve in seeing me. If I know the client's goals, in the short-term and long-term we will know better where to start, and ultimately how we can work together to achieve those goals. I work hard to provide the evidence-based nutrition knowledge and lifestyle strategies that will give us the best chance to meet those goals. Since the difficult part often happens outside of a client's time with me in the session, I typically heavily emphasize managing any lifestyle barriers that exist, which may be making the client's goals difficult to achieve.
Your first session with Benjamin
The first session is our chance to get to know each other and build a healthy working relationship. In a completely judgement-free manner, I want to get to know you, your goals and aspirations, and what brought you to see a dietitian. While our focus will be nutrition, of course, I never mind hearing about your other goals and you as a whole. This allows us to understand each other better and indirectly helps us reach our nutrition goals. We will discuss any barriers that may make it difficult for you to follow nutrition recommendations and ultimately accomplishing the plan we set up together. Once we determine goals and set up a plan, we're both comfortable with, I will convey my research-based and experience-driven nutrition knowledge in an easy-to-follow way. I will provide helpful handouts and a goal sheet to aid with success for once you leave the session.
