About Joan Marie
I am a Registered Dietitian with experience in fast-paced private practice and large healthcare systems, including UPMC and my current role at the VAMC in the outpatient setting. I specialize in weight management, diabetes care, and heart-healthy nutrition, and I am especially passionate about working with clients who want sustainable, realistic changes not quick fixes. In my current role at the VA, I work closely with individuals managing diabetes, cardiovascular health concerns, and weight goals. I also teach Womenâs Nutrition and Diabetes Nutrition education classes, where I enjoy translating evidence-based nutrition guidance into practical, everyday strategies.
Approach to care
My approach is collaborative and client-centered. I use motivational interviewing, personalized meal planning, and goal setting to help clients build confidence and create habits that fit their lifestyle, preferences, and health needs. Whether you are newly diagnosed, feeling stuck, or simply looking for structured support, I aim to meet you where you are and help you move forward with clarity and confidence. I believe nutrition should feel empowering, not overwhelming, and I look forward to supporting you on your health journey.
Your first session with Joan Marie
Your first session with me will be focused on getting to know you your health history, lifestyle, goals, and what has or hasnât worked for you in the past. We will discuss your medical background, current eating patterns, relationship with food, and any challenges you are experiencing related to your nutrition goals. Together, we will identify your priorities and establish realistic, achievable goals that fit your life. This session is collaborative and judgment-free, with time for your questions and concerns. I use motivational interviewing to help clarify what matters most to you and to build a plan that feels manageable and sustainable. You can expect to leave your first appointment with clear next steps, practical nutrition guidance, and a personalized action plan that may include meal planning strategies, goal setting, and tools to support behavior change. Follow up sessions will build on this foundation, adjusting your plan as your needs and goals evolve.
