About Mary
As a Registered Dietitian, I’ve worked with more than 20,000 patients, clients, and residents across diverse nutrition needs. My core strengths include weight management, bariatric surgery, diabetes care, heart disease prevention and management, oncology, and enteral/parenteral nutrition. I also bring experience as a bariatric coordinator and over a decade in healthcare marketing, where I blended clinical expertise with communication and strategy. Ultimately, my passion for patient care brought me back to the field of nutrition science, where I feel most fulfilled. I live in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia. I’m a lifelong learner and educator who thrives at the intersection of science and communication. A meaningful part of my story: I had gastric bypass surgery in 2001 and lost 100 pounds. That journey gives me a unique, empathetic perspective, and it fuels my passion for helping others achieve their goals in healthy, sustainable ways.
Approach to care
I believe nutrition care should be supportive, individualized, and free of judgment. I approach each client with an open mind, focusing on collaboration and creating goals together rather than prescribing rigid “diet rules.” Every body is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to food or health. I do not believe in using “ideal body weights” as a measure of success—instead, I work with clients to find the weight, lifestyle, and habits that allow them to feel their best.
Your first session with Mary
In our first session together, my focus will be on getting to know you. I’ll ask questions and encourage open dialogue about your past medical history, diet history, family history, lifestyle habits (both strengths and challenges), and more. From there, we’ll work collaboratively to create a personalized plan tailored to your needs and goals. Together, we’ll set realistic, achievable goals and explore behavioral strategies to support lasting success.
