About Melinda

Hi, I’m Melinda Penny-Washington, and I'm a Registered Dietitian with over 10 years of experience helping people at all stages of health. I combine science-based nutrition with cultural foods and traditions to support your well-being. I have worked with people managing diabetes of all types including gestational, as well as kidney disease, hypertension and dialysis. I have also supported people in substance use recovery. I help clients understand their bodies, improve lab results, and feel more confident about building a healthier relationship with food without giving up the cultural foods we love. I believe that eating well should feel helpful, meaningful, and realistic for everyday life.

Approach to care

A new diagnosis, like diabetes, hypertension or kidney disease, can make food feel confusing or overwhelming. You don’t have to figure it out alone. I’m here to support you and guide you one step at a time as you learn what works for your body. I use healing, science-based nutrition and include foods that are important to your culture and family traditions. Together, we focus on learning, building confidence, and creating simple, practical steps that support your health while keeping food enjoyable. Whether we are working on blood sugar balance, kidney health, or staying healthy in the future, our work is always centered on what feels possible for you.

Your first session with Melinda

Our first session is a friendly, supportive conversation where we get to know you and your needs. We’ll talk about your health history, lab results (if you have them), and any current concerns. We’ll also explore your relationship with food, your daily routines, and your favorite foods, as well as any diagnoses or goals for staying healthy. We’ll discuss what feels challenging and what has or hasn’t worked for you in the past. Together, we’ll make clear next steps and set realistic goals. You’ll leave with practical tips, a better understanding of your body, and a plan that feels doable—not overwhelming. You don’t need a diagnosis to work with me. Whether you’re managing a health condition or just want to feel better in your body, our work begins where you are.
