About Rachel
Hi there, my name is Dr. Rachel Iverson Schafer. I'm a board-certified sports dietitian who focuses on cardiovascular health, performance nutrition, and healthy aging. I really love getting to know people and understanding the barriers they face when it comes to finding the best nutrition routine. My style of practice focuses a lot on science, education, and helping you understand the methodology behind why we are choosing certain nutrients or foods to support your health. It is my deep belief that when you understand why a nutrient or food supports you, it is much easier to adhere to recommendations or find a way to fit it into your lifestyle.
Approach to care
My goal is always to make nutrition programs functional, enjoyable, and lasting. If you are looking for a quick fix, I’m probably not the person for you. My aim is to find a balance that you can maintain long-term to support your health goals. I always like to tell people my goal is to help you live a longer, healthier life so you can enjoy more delicious food. You will not find any fad diets, extreme weight management recommendations, or food restriction when working with me. I will only bring up weight management if you ask about it. Otherwise, I maintain a weight-neutral practice. I am well-versed in body dysmorphia and disordered eating, as it’s something I personally have experienced and can empathize with deeply.
Your first session with Rachel
In our first session, we'll thoroughly review your current health, medical history, goals, and obstacles. Afterwards, we'll develop an initial game plan and focus on one goal. Be prepared to engage in an open, detailed discussion about your health and beliefs, and to commit to taking action toward one of your goals. After working with me, you will have a better understanding of your relationship with food, how it’s affecting your everyday nutrition choices, the functions of foods, and how they support your specific nutrition plan. We’ll focus on optimizing your health and performance based on your genetics, personal preferences, grocery budget, and health history.
