About Shanta
I practice from a weight-neutral, non-diet perspective that prioritizes positive behavior changes, flexibility, and enjoyment rather than restriction. I support clients with prediabetes, diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and hyperlipidemia. I strive to make everyone feel respected and empowered in their health journey. My academic path began at Virginia State University, followed by my clinical internship at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. Today, I’m a diabetes educator with Mary Washington Health Care and am working toward becoming a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Outside of work, I spend with my family, enjoying podcasts, nature, and seasonal gardening.
Approach to care
As a dietitian, I believe good nutrition should feel welcoming and accessible to everyone—kids, adults, and families from all cultures. My approach blends clinical experience with compassion so we can work together in a way that feels supportive and realistic for your life. My calling is diabetes care, inspired by watching loved one’s struggle with complications from uncontrolled diabetes. As rates continue to rise and affect people everywhere, I’m committed to helping you regain control through education and sustainable lifestyle choices. Nutrition is a lifelong journey, so we’ll focus on small changes that create long-term health.
Your first session with Shanta
You can expect me to ask more questions about your daily routine—like your work schedule, eating habits, medications, activity level, and any doctor’s appointments connected to your diagnosis. From there we assess together what's most important to begin nutrition education/ counseling.
