About Torrie

It all started with a little kitchen set , a curious young girl and a red plaid cooking book for kids. This is how my love for all things food began to blossom. Growing up in the south, as you may know, the cuisines and dietary trends can often include some unhealthy food options. This options, which are typically passed down from generations. Food is always the centerpiece for every occasion. During my adolescence years, I began to realize, many of my family and friends were developing nutrition related health chronic diseases, which were often attributed to their dietary habits . Often, we think by taking medications and supplements, I can continue the same habits. The medication’s were more like a Band-Aid , masking the underlying cause . Rarely modified, it’s like an ongoing cycle. This fostered my decision to pursue a career in food and nutrition . I feel as a dietitian, I am the champion of health and wellness.

Approach to care

I see this concept as food as medicine. Food is medicine refers to the concept that what we eat can significantly influence our health and well-being. My approach is to assist patient with tailoring meals and food choices that cater to specific health needs. This often starts with me collaborating with community partners and providing health related conversations and nutrition education and providing access to a nutrition professional. From grocery store tours, speaking at health fairs or to faith based groups, my aim is to increase the understanding that dietary habits can prevent and manage chronic diseases. With research showing that approximately 80% of chronic diseases are related to our dietary trends , the idea that food as medicine can be a powerful tool for health, promotion, and disease prevention. My approach starts with an emphasis on the inclusion of whole, unprocessed foods into our daily diet have proven health benefits.
